Sandringham Cycling Route

This 22-mile cycle route takes you through a mix of well-kept roadsides, pretty estate villages, and ancient unsurfaced tracks. You will pass through the Sandringham Estate, which is home to the British royal family’s Norfolk retreat, as well as other historically significant sites.

Route Highlights

  • Sandringham Estate: Start near the Camping & Caravan site at Double Lodges and head into the estate village of West Newton. Don’t miss the historic Church of Saints Peter and Paul, with its stained glass windows dedicated to the Norfolk Regiment. For more information about Sandringham, visit Sandringham Estate.
  • Anmer Village: Known for its close links to Sandringham, this peaceful village has royal connections, and you can pass by the estate's Gothic water tower, which has now been converted into a home.
  • Peddars Way and Tumuli: As you cross the ancient Peddars Way, you’ll pass ancient burial mounds known as Tumuli, which date back to prehistoric times.
  • Harpley Village: After carefully crossing the A148, explore the historic Church of St Lawrence, famous for its beautiful rood screen and carved roof.
  • Great Massingham: A quintessential English village, Great Massingham boasts a beautiful village green, expansive ponds, and the charming Dabbling Duck pub, a great spot to stop for refreshments.
  • Flitcham: The name "Felix’s Ham" comes from Saint Felix, who resided here after arriving from France in AD 630. You’ll cycle past its lovely farmland before joining the road back to West Newton.
  • Appleton Church Ruins: Near the end of your loop, you can stop to explore the haunting ruins of Appleton Church, a reminder of Norfolk’s rich ecclesiastical history.

This moderate ride offers a fantastic mix of royal history, ancient landmarks, and charming villages, with enough variety to keep you engaged for about 4.5 hours.
